Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali, one of the most cherished festivals in India. This auspicious day, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is celebrated by worshipping Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi to invite health, wealth, and prosperity into our lives. The word “Dhanteras” itself combines “Dhan” meaning wealth and “Teras” referring to the 13th day of the lunar month, when this celebration takes place.
On Dhanteras, it is a tradition to purchase precious metals like gold and silver, or household items, symbolizing good fortune. Many people also buy new utensils, jewelry, or other valuable items to mark the start of an abundant year. Homes are decorated with colorful rangolis, and doorways are adorned with flowers and diyas (oil lamps), creating a warm and welcoming environment to attract positive energy.
The evening of Dhanteras is dedicated to the Dhanteras Puja, where families gather to worship Goddess Lakshmi, asking for her blessings of health, wealth, and happiness. Many also pray to Lord Kuber, the god of wealth, to bring stability and abundance into their homes.
Beyond traditions, Dhanteras reminds us of the importance of gratitude, generosity, and the value of sharing prosperity with others. As we light lamps and offer prayers, we welcome not only material wealth but also the richness of relationships, good health, and peace in our lives.
May this Dhanteras bring joy, success, and new opportunities to you and your loved ones. Wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous Dhanteras!
